February marks the commencement of Black History Month, a time dedicated to honoring the profound contributions, resilience, and heritage of African Americans throughout history.

This annual observance is not only a celebration of the achievements of Black individuals but also a reminder of the struggles they have faced and continue to confront in the pursuit of equality and justice.

The origins of Black History Month can be traced back to the early 20th century when Carter G. Woodson, a pioneering African American historian, and educator, recognized the need to highlight the often-overlooked accomplishments of Black Americans.

In 1926, he established “Negro History Week,” choosing the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, two pivotal figures in the abolition of slavery in the United States.

Over time, this week-long observance evolved into Black History Month, officially recognized by the U.S. government in 1976. Since then, it has grown into a global celebration, fostering greater awareness and appreciation of Black culture, heritage, and achievements.
